Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has set a three-month timeline for implementing police reforms. In a meeting chaired by her in Lahore, several key decisions were taken regarding police reforms across the province. It was decided that “Pink Buttons” would be installed outside police stations to address public complaints related to the police. Additionally, body cameras will be installed on 10 officers at each police station. On Maryam Nawaz’s directive, the Inspector General (IG) Punjab has also decided to introduce reforms in the traffic police. The Chief Minister has approved funds for body cameras, and 14,000 body cams along with 700 Pink Buttons will be installed across the province. It was further decided to implement video and audio recording of investigations and to introduce an online FIR tracking system in Punjab. The Chief Minister has also ordered police personnel to address every citizen as “Sir.” She directed that complaints related to the police be resolved within two to three hours. Meanwhile, the meeting also decided to introduce an online system for registering FIRs regarding the loss of documents and identity cards. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also instructed the IG and other senior police officers to personally call citizens to obtain public feedback.
